Ridge Monte Bello Vertical Tasting Dinner
Venue: Lux Steakhouse
Synopsis:
Monte Bello is the flagship wine from Ridge Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. This Bordeaux style red blend is perhaps one of the most famous red wines in the world. Winemaker Paul Draper has been named person of the year by numerous wine publications and institutions. In the 1976 Judgement of Paris tasting which pitted the best of Bordeaux versus California, the 1971 Monte Bello placed fifth, well ahead of some of Bordeaux's heavyweights. When the tasting was re-enacted in 2006 with all the original vintages, the 1971 Monte Bello placed first. When our own Noble RoT Society also re-enacted that tasting a couple of years ago using modern vintages, the 2004 Monte Bello also placed first in our blind tasting.
The wines will be paired with three small plates courses.
The first flight of wine to kick off the night will be white, featuring the 2008 and 2010 Estate Chardonnay and the 2010 Monte Bello Chardonnay.
Then we'll have two flights of the red Monte Bello. The first flight features vintages 1990, 1995, and 1999. The second features 2004, 2005 and 2007. In case of corked or otherwise faulty wines, the very young 2008 and 2009 vintages will be on "stand-by."
